Remember the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare? We were always taught to be the tortoise: vigilant and methodical; as opposed to the hare who relied on speed and greater risk-taking and achieved the expected outcomes. Today, successful IT leaders enable their organizations to be both – to operate with the fiduciary responsibility, governance and security stewardship of the tortoise and the swiftness, agility and (managed) risk-taking of the hare.

New technologies are emerging all over the place. Whether we're talking about wearable devices, new apps, collaboration platforms, the internet of things, physical gadgets or the like, there's no denying that emerging technologies can seem overwhelming. This is especially true since these technologies are all so easy to access or download. Anyone can download an app or get access to the best piece of enterprise software available within a few short minutes. Many people start to few these technologies as toys which can sometimes be a problem from the perspective of an organization. Businesses should indeed view technologies as tools and not toys.
